Lembongan is approximately 8 square kilometers in size with a permanent population estimated at 8,000. The island is surrounded by coral reefs with white sand beaches and low limestone cliffs. There are two main villages on the island: Jungut Batu and Lembongan. The north-eastern side of the island is flanked by a relatively large area of mangroves totaling some 212 hectares.
Two main beach areas have traditionally attracted visitors. Jungut Batu in the northwest is the bigger of the two. The white sand beach here is pleasant enough but nothing to get too excited about, and it is a little narrow in places. Sunsets are best viewed along the main Jungut Batu beachfront. Mushroom Bay to the southwest of Jungut Batu is a quaint, attractive, and sheltered bay. It has a great white sandy beach, along with some cozy little water-side restaurants.
Further south, Dream Beach and Sunset Beach (or Sandy Bay), are some of the most beautiful in Bali. A beautiful view can be seen from the cliff on the right side of the Dream beach, especially at the sunset. The north end of the island is fringed by an important mangrove forest, and the eastern side of the island is separated from neighboring Nusa Ceningan by a shallow estuarine channel.
Lembongan (12 km of the Badung strait) is reached by regular direct speed-boat services, mostly from the east-coast Bali resort town of Sanur. Crossing time is approximately 30 minutes and services run at regular intervals during daylight hours.
